CyborgEros

Lighting design for a dance performance blurring boundaries between stage and audience, virtual and physical, using AI recognition and algorithm technologies.

[Role] Lighting Designer & Director

Overview

In this interdisciplinary dance work, I served as the Lighting Designer and Director. The project’s primary challenge was achieving a delicate visual equilibrium between a live physical performance and real-time multi-camera projection.

Design Concept

  • Multi-Device Optical Balancing — Managed the lighting to ensure optimal exposure across a diverse range of sensors — from professional DSLRs to webcams and iPhones — all capturing the performers simultaneously. Solved the inherent conflicts between live human vision and various camera dynamic ranges, ensuring the projected feed and the physical stage remained visually consistent.
  • Digital Aesthetic & LED Integration — Integrated addressable LED strips with traditional lighting fixtures to echo the work’s theme of cyborg identity and digital eroticism. This created a high-contrast, “digital light” environment that felt both sterile and organic, mirroring the interaction of humanity and technology.
  • Real-time Visual Synchronization — Orchestrated a lighting language that responded to the live video feedback loop, reinforcing the “glitch” and “networked” atmosphere of the choreography.
