Flowing Feast

Overview

For the opening performance of the Tainan Arts Festival, I served as the Lighting Designer and Director, transforming a historic 19th-century fortress into a massive, immersive stage and party space. The challenge was to create a cohesive visual language that bridged diverse art forms, ranging from traditional Taiwanese Opera and musical theater to contemporary dance and a high-energy electronic set.

Design Concept

• Architectural Synergy — I designed a specialized lighting configuration that complemented the mountain-shaped stage structure. By using light as a structural element, I extended the physical stage’s silhouette, giving the massive installation a sense of “organic life” and pulse.
• Beam Formation Logic — The beam design was built around three distinct directional systems that could be combined into various formations: (1) Mountain — beams following the angular silhouette of the stage structure, extending its form skyward; (2) Radial — a circular structure at the center of the mountain creating a sun-like radial burst; (3) Vertical — four straight vertical columns of light (left, center-left, center-right, right) providing strong directional anchors. By layering and recombining these three systems, every scene could be given a unique beam formation while maintaining visual coherence across the show.
• Crossover Narrative — I orchestrated the visual transitions between radically different genres, ensuring that the lighting evolved from the poetic atmosphere of traditional theater to the rhythmic intensity of a modern electronic party.
