What is NYU IDM? A Complete Guide to Integrated Design and Media
Everything you need to know about NYU Tandon's Integrated Design and Media (IDM) master's program — a cross-disciplinary program combining art, design, and technology.
Disclaimer: Information below is based on 2025-2026 data. Tuition, requirements, and policies may change. Always verify with official NYU sources before applying.
What is NYU IDM?
IDM stands for Integrated Design and Media, a Master of Science (M.S.) program at NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering. The program is STEM-designated, qualifying graduates for 3-year OPT.
Note: The program was formerly known as “Integrated Digital Media” — you may still see this name in older materials.
Simply put: It’s a place where you use technology to make art, and think about technology through an artistic lens.
It’s not a pure art school, and it’s not a pure engineering school. It sits at the intersection — you can code interactive installations, 3D print sculptures, or make documentaries about technology’s impact on society.
Who is it For?
- Designers who want to learn coding
- Engineers who want to learn design
- Artists who want to create with technology
- People who don’t know what they want but are interested in both tech and creativity
IDM students come from incredibly diverse backgrounds: architecture, fine arts, software engineering, and fields completely unrelated to either.
No one here will ask you “why do you want to learn everything?”
Curriculum
IDM is a 30-credit master’s program, typically completed in 2 years (part-time option available).
Core Courses
- Ideation & Prototyping — From concept to prototype
- Creativity & Computation — Creative coding
- Design & Production Studio — Hands-on project work
Concentration Areas (Many Options)
| Area | What You’ll Learn |
|---|---|
| Creative Coding | Processing, p5.js, openFrameworks |
| Physical Computing | Arduino, sensors, interactive installations |
| 3D & Animation | Maya, Blender, Unity |
| UX/UI Design | User research, interface design |
| Game Design | Game design theory, Unity development |

Why Choose IDM?
1. It’s in New York
New York is the global hub for creative industries. Google, Meta, major design firms, museums, and independent art spaces are all here.
Plenty of internship opportunities, industry events, and networking.
2. Facilities & Resources
IDM is located at 370 Jay Street, 3rd floor — right below ITP (4th floor). IDM also has spaces at Brooklyn Navy Yard and Building 22 (3rd floor). Each cohort has about 60-80 students.
- MakerSpace — Laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC, electronics
- Motion Capture Studio — Full motion capture setup
- VR/AR Lab — Latest XR equipment
- Recording Studio — Professional audio recording
Whatever you want to make, the equipment is there.
3. Cross-Registration
NYU students can take classes across schools:
- ITP (Tisch) — More art-focused tech courses
- Game Center (Tisch) — Game design
- Stern — Business courses
- Other Tandon courses — Machine learning, computer vision, etc.
4. Thesis Show
Every May, IDM hosts a thesis show featuring graduate work. It’s a great opportunity for industry exposure.
Career Paths
IDM graduates go into diverse fields:
| Role | Company Types |
|---|---|
| Creative Technologist | Ad agencies, interactive design studios |
| UX Designer | Tech companies, design consultancies |
| Game Designer | Game studios, indie games |
| XR Developer | VR/AR companies |
| Motion Designer | Film, advertising |
| Data Visualization Designer | Media companies, news organizations |
| Physical Computing Artist | Museums, art institutions |
| PhD Programs | Academia |
Some graduates freelance, start studios, or do completely unrelated but cool things.
Application Requirements
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (any field)
- English proficiency (strict minimums):
- TOEFL iBT: 90+
- IELTS: 7.0+
- Duolingo: 125+
- GRE not required
Application Materials
- Portfolio — Most important!
- Statement of Purpose
- CV/Resume
- 2-3 Recommendation Letters
- Transcripts
Portfolio Tips
The portfolio is key. It doesn’t need to be perfect professional work, but should show:
- Your thought process — Why did you make this? How?
- Diversity — Different types of work
- Your perspective — What issues do you care about?
What to include:
- Code projects (interactive websites, apps, creative coding)
- Design work (UI, graphic, product)
- Art projects (installations, video, sound)
- Video, animation
- Photos/videos of physical work
No portfolio yet? Start making! Create experiments with p5.js, design interfaces in Figma, shoot a short film. The point is showing potential and passion.
Tuition & Living Costs
Tuition (2025-2026)
IDM charges per credit — more affordable than flat-rate programs.
- $2,272 USD per credit
- 30 credits total = ~$68,160 USD (tuition only, excluding fees)
Living Expenses (NYC is Expensive)
| Item | Monthly Estimate |
|---|---|
| Rent (Brooklyn shared) | $1,200 - $1,800 |
| Food | $500 - $800 |
| Transport (subway pass) | $132 |
| Other | $200 - $400 |
Annual living costs: approximately $25,000 - $35,000 USD.
Financial Aid
- Tandon Scholarship — Automatically evaluated at admission
- On-campus jobs — TA, RA, MakerSpace assistant
- External scholarships — Fulbright, home country scholarships
IDM vs ITP?
A common question is how IDM differs from ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program).
| IDM (Tandon) | ITP (Tisch) | |
|---|---|---|
| Degree | M.S. | M.P.S. |
| Credits | 30 credits | 60 credits |
| Duration | 1.5-2 years | 2 years |
| Tuition Model | Per credit (~$68K total) | Flat rate (~$159K total) |
| English | Strict minimum (TOEFL 90) | Recommended (TOEFL 100+) |
| Location | 370 Jay St, 3F | 370 Jay St, 4F |
| STEM OPT | Yes (3 years) | Yes (3 years) |
ITP students can take IDM courses, but not vice versa — IDM uses letter grades (A/B/C/D) while ITP uses Pass/Fail.
Which to choose? Depends on the atmosphere you want. For more structure and technical depth, choose IDM. For more freedom and experimentation, choose ITP.
Is it Right for You?
You might be a good fit if:
- ✅ You like making things with your hands
- ✅ You’re interested in both tech and art
- ✅ You’re willing to try unfamiliar things
- ✅ You’re okay with “no right answers”
- ✅ You want to live in NYC for two years
You might not be a good fit if:
- ❌ You only want to specialize in one technical area (pure CS might be better)
- ❌ You don’t like making projects, just want lectures and exams
- ❌ You expect a clear career path after graduation
